About
In December 2020 we created an unprecedented ice mapping show for Tencent’s Game for Peace on the frozen surface of the Songhua River in Harbin. In extreme conditions of minus thirty degrees Celsius we extended projection mapping beyond the familiar wall based medium onto the ice surface for the first time, delivering a refreshing sense of visual impact and immersive experience through a highly challenging and innovative approach. The entire process was full of difficulties. The severe cold tested the stability of equipment operation. The 18 meter high support structures had to withstand strong winds. Complex and distorted projection angles along with reflections from the ice and ambient lighting interference posed additional challenges to image quality. Through multiple site surveys and repeated simulations we overcame climatic and technical barriers step by step from concept to execution. The final presentation successfully integrated virtual game visuals, virtual props, physical installations, and live performers, utilizing mixed reality technology to create an immersive battle space that blurred the boundary between virtuality and reality.Compared to previous mapping forms this project marked a major breakthrough. The first attempt at large scale ice surface mapping not only achieved a technological leap but also incorporated live performance. This allowed audiences to experience a heightened sense of interaction and presence beyond strong visual impact.Performers executed precise choreography and vehicle interactions on the slippery ice surface perfectly synchronized with light projections and virtual elements, immersing viewers in a highly realistic game environment.Ultimately the ice mapping show delivered stunning visuals and a unique experience, presenting an interactive and highly immersive Game for Peace themed production. It marked an unprecedented creative breakthrough achieved under extreme environmental conditions.
